Program Overview and Objectives
The 2006 Heart Valve Summit brings together several of the world’s leading cardiologists and cardiac surgeons to provide a comprehensive review of recent advances in the treatment of valvular heart disease. This conference is geared toward the practicing cardiologist and cardiac surgeon who evaluate and manage patients with valvular heart disease. From initial evaluation based on the new ACC/AHA Guidelines through to cutting-edge treatment options, this summit will support your clinical practice and give you up-to-date information on future directions.

The program will include discussion of:

  • new ACC/AHA Valve Disease Guidelines and Recommendations
  • surgical and percutaneous therapies for valvular heart disease
  • aortic root surgery: indications and technical challenges
  • mitral valve disease: medical and surgical considerations
  • cardiovascular imaging modalities, including  echo, CT and MRI, to identify, treat and follow valvular heart problems
  • case demonstrations of surgical valve repair techniques
  • controversies in heart valve management, including choice of valve prosthesis, concomitant valve and revascularization surgery; and the use of statins for bioprosthesis and degenerative valve disease
  • technical tricks and traps of valve repair

Objectives

Upon completion of this program, participants should be able to:

  • recognize advances in aortic valve and root  disease evaluation and surgical treatment options    
  • apply the new ACC/AHA Valve Disease Guidelines to your clinical practice
  • identify when to refer patients for surgery
  • discuss surgical indications, techniques and outcomes for valve repair surgery
  • describe congenital valve disease and surgical or percutaneous repair options
  • evaluate controversial issues in the management of heart valve disease and identify the pros and cons surrounding the issue
