PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Statement of Need
The evolving requirement for certification and maintenance of certification is spurred by both leaders in the profession and the public agreeing that physicians must do more to demonstrate that they are skilled and knowledgeable. In a survey for the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM), 98 percent of respondents felt that doctors should meet rigorous standards set by an independent, professional organization of medical doctors. In addition, 79 percent of respondents felt that re-certification of physicians is very important.

Demonstration of competence in the evaluation and treatment of patients with cardiovascular disease is dependent in part on the successful completion of proctored examinations for certification and re-certification offered by the ABIM. Importantly, the American College of Cardiology (ACC) is the right partner to bring this type of learning to the medical profession. In a survey of ACC members in the Fall of 2006, physicians stated that while they are a member of a number of medical societies, ACC is considered to be best at providing the educational and professional development needs for its members, specifically through the CV Board Review Course.

Overview
Prepare for the ABIM Board exam with a program designed to meet your learning needs.  This intensive review course will provide you with an expansive, contemporary and in-depth summary of cardiovascular diseases, with emphasis on pathogenesis,  pathophysiology, natural history, epidemiology, and evidence-based guidelines for diagnostic assessment and clinical management. Faculty members will orient their  lectures to the exams, offering their expert insights on how to think through Board questions and prepare for the exam. The curriculum also serves as a comprehensive and in-depth review for those attendees who are not planning to take the Board exam.

This program will include a combination of didactic lectures, case-based content reviews with emphasis on guidelines, knowledge and practice management multiple choice  questions and imaging and ECG workshops. In addition, you will have the opportunity to compare your answers to your peers and faculty experts using an audience response system.

A separate Maintenance of Certification Study Session will be offered for those attendees who need to complete an ABIM knowledge module as part of the recertification process.

Learner Objectives
Upon completion of this program, attendees should be able to —

  • Identify gaps in knowledge base
  • Focus study efforts on filling gap areas
  • Understand the distribution of expected examination questions
  • Become familiar with ABIM answer forms for ECG and echo analysis
  • Practice ABIM-style multiple choice test taking
  • Develop test-taking strategies
