PROGRAM
OVERVIEW
Statement of Need
Interventional Cardiology has blossomed from a simple technique
for opening the limited, discrete coronary lesion to a myriad of
techniques, technologies and pharmacologic adjuncts for managing
and treating coronary, valvular, congenital, acquired and non-cardiac
vascular disease. Achieving optimal patient outcomes requires not
only clinical and technical proficiency but also a broad fund of
knowledge spanning a multitude of disciplines. Maintenance of this
high level of knowledge is a requisite to assuring competence and
proficiency, with Board Certification now recognized as a marker
of competence and proficiency among physicians practicing this highly
specialized discipline.
Overview
2009 marks the year when over 2,000 Interventionalists must recertify.
Prepare for certification or recertification now by joining us in
Dallas for an in-depth, comprehensive review of interventional cardiology
today. This program offers an unbiased and up-to-date, evidence-based
review of interventional cardiology, including basic science, pharmacology,
imaging, and procedural selection and technique. Our expert faculty
will guide attendees through comprehensive and robust updates, and
lead interactive discussions of ABIM examination guidelines. Furthermore,
recertifiers may participate in the optional Maintenance of Certification
Study Session offered on Saturday evening.
For information regarding admissions requirements for the exam,
call ABIM at (800) 441-ABIM or (215) 446-3500.
Learner Objectives
Upon completion of this program, attendees should be able to —
• Elucidate key concepts of vascular biology and atherosclerosis,
including vessel injury, plaque formation, inflammation, thrombosis
and restenosis
• Explain the thrombosis pathways and the use of anti-thrombotic
therapeutics, including antiplatelet, anticoagulant and thrombolytic
agents
• Provide an overview of pharmacologic adjuncts useful in
PCI, including antiarrhythmic, vasodilator and other vasoactive
therapeutics
• Discuss imaging fundamentals, including radiation exposure
and contrast nephrotoxicity
• Delineate and present fundamental concepts of cardiovascular
physiology, stressing assessment of coronary and valvular hemodynamics
and pathophysiology
• Create a construct for understanding adult congenital heart
disease and the application of interventional therapies in this
setting
• Examine both existing and emerging interventional devices
and techniques in interventional cardiology
• Interpret and critique the findings of major clinical trials
in interventional cardiology, including a review of the fundamentals
of statistics
• Summarize ACC/AHA/SCAI Guidelines regarding the practice
of interventional cardiology, particularly with respect to indications
for catheterization and intervention
