| Heart
disease kills some 950,000 Americans every year. It is the leading
cause of death in the United States for both men and women,
but as many as two-thirds of these deaths are preventable. For
50 years, the American College of Cardiology (ACC) has represented
physicians who are experts in the prevention and treatment of
heart disease. The ACC's mission includes professional education
and the development of standards and guidelines to help these
physicians better treat patients and help prevent heart disease.
Physicians become Fellows of the ACC (FACC) or Masters of the
ACC (MACC) by election.
As a pediatric cardiologist, I know that heart disease starts
in childhood. Heart-healthy lifestyles must begin with our
children and we must set examples. Parents and doctors
must work together in preventing and treating heart disease
as well as obtaining health care coverage for every American.

The
American College of Cardiology and the Florida Department
of Citrus are pleased to have worked together on this educational
booklet to increase women's awareness of heart disease and
the steps they can take to lower their risk factors. The ACC's
participation in this booklet is not intended to be an endorsement
or promotion of any product(s) mentioned. The ACC does not
endorse commercial products.
