Michele
Orza Named Director of ACC Scientific and Research Services
(Jun. 1, 1999) The American College of Cardiology (ACC)
recently named Michele Orza, ScD, the new director of
Scientific and Research Services. Dr. Orza will provide
scientific support for a wide range of activities including
the ACC National Cardiovascular Data Registryä, quality
of care measurement, and practice guideline development.
"Dr.
Orza brings a great deal of experience in clinical and
health services research in addition to her extensive
public service," said Marie Michnich, DrPH, ACC senior
associate executive vice president for Clinical Practice
and Scientific Services. "Her background and leadership
skills make her a valuable asset to the College and
to our overall mission."
Dr. Orza received a bachelor's degree from Harvard/Radcliffe
University and master of science and a doctor of science
(ScD) degrees from the Harvard School of Public Health.
Her major field of study was program evaluation with
a minor in biostatistics and technology assessment.
During this time, she also worked as a research assistant
for the Technology Assessment Group at the Harvard School
of Public Health and co-authored several meta-analyses.
Dr. Orza joins the ACC from the U.S. General Accounting
Office (GAO), where she served as an assistant director
of the GAO's Health, Education, and Human Services Division.
While at the GAO, she assisted in several studies of
the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's new drug review
and approval process.
The ACC, a 24,000-member nonprofit professional medical
society and teaching institution, is dedicated to fostering
optimal cardiovascular care and disease prevention through
professional education, promotion of research, leadership
in the development of standards and guidelines, and
the formulation of health care policy.
