| Looking for a Few Good Writers |
The Fellows in Training column in Cardiology magazine has become one of the most read Cardiology sections, thanks to the excellent guidance of James Beckerman, M.D. Recent topics have included: the need for adult congenital heart disease training, a satirical commentary on taking ABIM’s cardiovascular board exam and one female fellow’s job search experience. If you are interested in writing for Cardiology, send your ideas or contributions to cardiologyeditor@acc.org or to jamesbeckerman@hotmail.com. Consider writing short articles for FIT Forum, too, and send to adees@acc.org.

CMS Announces NPI ‘Good Faith’ Contingency Plan
Last week, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), released its contingency plan for the rapidly approaching National Provider Identifier (NPI) compliance deadline of May 23, 2007. Under this plan, during the 12-month period immediately following the compliance date, CMS will not impose penalties on covered entities that deploy contingency plans if they have made reasonable and diligent efforts to become compliant. Covered entities are defined by HIPAA as a health plan, a health care clearinghouse, or a health care provider that transmits any health information in electronic form in connection with a HIPAA transaction.
The ACC is encouraged by these steps to ensure an easier transition into NPI. However, the College strongly urges its members to apply for their NPIs immediately. Also, begin sharing your NPIs with business associates including health plans. Medicare is currently accepting both NPIs and legacy provider numbers as a means to crosswalk these identifiers. | AMA, ACC to Conduct Physician Practice Information Survey |
The American Medical Association (AMA), with the support of the ACC and more than 60 other medical specialty societies, is conducting a multi-specialty survey to collect information on physician practice characteristics. Data related to professional practice expenses will also be collected. The AMA will survey thousands of physicians over the year from virtually all physician specialties to ensure accurate and fair representation for all physicians and their patients. You may be contacted by the Gallup Organization to participate in this study. We encourage your participation, as the data obtained will be a critical source of information for the AMA, ACC, and national policymakers. Please watch for this survey and do your part in completing it in a thorough and accurate manner. |
