Conference 8
Cardiovascular Problems Associated With Aviation Safety
April 25-26, 1975
Published: Oct 1975 American Journal of Cardiology
In 1975, there had been a significant increase in the
magnitude of stress in all phases of civilian and military
aviation. Therefore, it was appropriate that this Conference
readdress cardiovascular problems in aviation safety,
particularly since an abundance of new information had
been accumulated in the last ten years (First Bethesda
Conference held in November 1965 addressed "Standards
of Physical Fitness of Aircrew").
This Conference convened to identify causes, clinical
course and possible risk of cardiovascular disease in
aviation medicine. The Conference confined its conclusions
to the scientific facts to protect pilots, passengers
and civilian population from potential hazards of in-flight
cardiovascular accidents.
Eight Task Forces addressed the following topics: 1)
Identification of Ischemic Heart Disease; 2) Recommendations
for Subjects With Ischemic Heart Disease; 3) Recommendations
for Postoperative Patients With Ischemic Heart Disease;
4) Cerebral Vascular Disease, Venous and Arterial Thrombosis,
5) Hypertension; 6) Valvular Heart Disease; 7) Congenital
Heart Disease; 8) Myocardial-Pericardial Disease; and
9) Arrhythmias.
