Clinical Data Standards
The ACC has long recognized the value of clinical data. With the understanding of the importance of standardizing a common language for describing the evaluation, treatment, and outcomes of patients with a range of cardiovascular conditions, the ACC has embarked on the development of clinical data standards. In addition to the expertise of the members of the ACC/AHA Task Force on Clinical Data Standards and related Writing Committees, current scientific evidence, clinical trials and national registries provide the foundation for the selection and definition of data elements.

Clinical data standards are sets of standardized data elements and corresponding definitions that can be used in a variety of data collection efforts. The ACC hopes that these standards will bring about improved comparison of clinical outcomes between various trials and registries as well as facilitate data management in future trials and registries. Furthermore, it is hoped that these standardized definitions will allow for better quality-of-care assessment and improvement in addition to providing a source for evaluating performance measures.
