CMS Opens Reconsideration For TMVR NCD

Earlier this month, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) began the process of reconsidering its Transcatheter Mitral Valve Repair (TMVR) National Coverage Determination (NCD) by opening a national coverage analysis to garner initial public comments. This is a direct result of advocacy efforts from the ACC and others including the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography, and the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, who requested reconsideration earlier this year – with a heavy focus on incorporating coverage for TMVR of functional mitral regurgitation patients, and continued data collection.

After the initial comment period, CMS will consider feedback, and perform analysis to write a draft NCD, which is expected to be posted by mid-February. There will then be a 30-day comment period on the proposed draft, with a final NCD expected to be posted by mid-May. Members may comment directly to CMS through the comment portal here.
