Wrapping Up 2013!
It’s been a busy week! On the ACC front, the College and its partners released new "Multimodality Imaging Appropriate Use Criteria (AUC) for the Detection and Risk Assessment of Stable Ischemic Heart Disease (SIHD)" that for the first time integrates the ratings of a variety of imaging procedures ranging from exercise ECG to the diagnostic coronary angiogram. We also released new performance measures designed to benchmark and improve the quality of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) procedures, and launched our newest CardioSource Clinical Community focused on dyslipidemia. Additionally, ACC participated in the first of several kick-off events for hospitals participating in the new Patient Navigator Program. ACC CEO Shal Jacobovitz represented the College at MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC, in celebrating the innovative new program that will support a team of caregivers at selected hospitals to help patients overcome challenges during their hospital stay and in the weeks following discharge when they are at most risk for readmission.Congress has also been busy ironing out a government spending plan. This week the Senate passed the budget plan in a vote of 64 to 36. Last week, the House overwhelmingly voted in favor of the bill (332 to 94). Now, the budget framework has been sent to the President’s desk. After months of tension and a government shutdown, this news signals progress for Congress working together to advance crucial legislation. This budget plan is of significant importance to the medical field as it replaces for three months the 24 percent Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) cut scheduled for Jan. 1, 2014 with a 0.5 percent payment update. This patch lays the groundwork for final SGR repeal in the New Year. Thanks to the College’s Advocacy staff and leaders for all of their hard work in helping to lay this groundwork. If this much can be accomplished in one week, I can’t wait to see what we can do in one year! The next year is an exciting one for the College as we embark on implementing our new Strategic Plan, celebrate our 65th Anniversary, roll out a new quality program for hospitals and institutions; welcome ACC.14 attendees to Washington, DC, and so much more! I look forward to working with ACC members, leaders and staff to bring these programs to life. In the meantime, enjoy the holidays!
