Unique Program Explores Advances in the Middle East

This post was authored by Douglas Zipes, MD, MACC, past president of the ACC, and co-chair of the 6th Annual ACC Cardiovascular Conference on the Middle East.

Several years ago, I had a vision of a program that would bring together medical experts from all nations of the Middle East and North Africa in the spirit of collaboration to explore advances made in the diagnosis, treatment and management of cardiovascular disease in the region. This vision was realized when we put together the first ACC Cardiovascular Conference on the Middle East. Six years later, the symposium continues to be a highlight of international programming at the ACC’s Annual Scientific Session.

Co-Chaired by Ari Kugelmass, MD, FACC, and Hani Najm, MD, MS, FACC, this year’s symposium will feature a plenary lecture by the renowned Eugene Braunwald, MD, MACC, on the 10 advances that define modern cardiology. The sessions will focus on cardiovascular imaging and valvular heart disease – two global epidemics with particular burden in the Middle East region – and attendees will hear two Middle East perspectives, a U.S. perspective and a panel discussion.

I have always been interested in expanding the global reach of the College, and I am glad to see the support of cardiology around the world, especially in the Middle East. With the ACC’s growing international presence and programs in the Middle East, I know this year’s symposium will be the most vibrant one yet.

The 6th Annual Cardiovascular Conference on the Middle East will take place on Friday, March 28, from 1:30 – 5:00 p.m. – one day before ACC.14 kicks-off – at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, and will be followed by a networking reception for attendees. For more information or to register for the program, visit CardioSource.org/International.
