In response to the need for more information about the use and outcomes of interventional procedures for the treatment of endovascular therapy patients, the ACC has launched its newest registry, the Peripheral Vascular Intervention (PVI) Registry.

The PVI Registry, which replaces and expands upon the ACC's CARE Registry, assesses the prevalence, demographics, management and outcomes of patients undergoing percutaneous treatment for their peripheral vascular disease (PVD). The registry will continue to offer data collection for carotid artery stenting and carotid endarterectomy procedures, but now incorporates lower extremity peripheral arterial catheter-based procedures for more complete reporting on PVD treatments.

"We are very excited to offer this new registry," said Thomas T. Tsai, MD, MsC, FACC, chair of the PVI Registry steering committee. "It will provide a wealth of information on these very prevalent procedures, and will – through hospital and physician-level reports – allow us to measure and improve upon the care we provide to our PVD patients."

Like other ACC registries, the PVI Registry provides physicians and hospitals with quarterly risk-adjusted benchmark reports and executive summary dashboards that allow for detailed comparisons. These reports provide important data on endovascular technologies and treatments, benchmarked against national standards. Data can be used to assess guideline adherence, uncover opportunities for performance improvement and meet new ABIM Maintenance of Certification Part IV requirements.

"An innovational aspect of the registry is that it captures data from a variety of locations, and for a multidisciplinary team of physicians." said Tsai. "The registry provides measurement and the infrastructure for quality improvement programs through benchmarking and reporting not only when care is provided in a hospital cath lab, but also in the interventional radiology suite, operating room, or outpatient vascular center."

On a broad scale, the data gleaned from the PVI Registry will assist with the evaluation of new and emerging technologies including assessment and support for new devices, pharmacologic therapies and off-label device use. Analysis of data will also be available for independent and institutional research projects, helping to answer complex scientific questions about patient characteristics and outcomes as well as the use and effectiveness of these treatments.
