JACC Journals: Breaking the Binding on Traditional CV Publications

When it comes to publishing original cardiovascular research from around the world, the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC) and JACC family of journals continue to rank among the top go-to sources. As such, the journals have increasingly added new features and tools to help clinicians put the science published within their pages into practice.

“As the editor-in-chief of JACC, I have sought to publish insightful content that seeks to impact practice, delivered in a simple manner for the busy cardiovascular clinician,” said Valentin Fuster, MD, PhD, MACC. Over the last several years, JACC Journals have developed and implemented popular podcast series, a robust social media presence, and a streamlined, interactive new website. Readers can also earn dual Maintenance of Certification/Continuing Medical Education credit through regularly-scheduled JACC Journal activities.

JACC itself has found success with Central Illustrations that visually explain the key findings from papers, as well as its new Guidelines Hubs that provide readers with streamlined access to not only the guideline, but related resources, commentary and published research. Under Fuster’s leadership, ACC leaders, Fellows in Training (FITs) and other Member Sections have also had increased opportunities to share new ideas and commentary. Additionally, focused issues on topics like cardiovascular health promotion have generated important discussions not only in academia, but the mainstream media as well.

Bolstered by the success of these new elements and his overarching vision, Fuster said JACC will launch several new review article series in 2018. An eight-part JACC Health Promotion series will debut first and will focus on eight risk factors (nutrition and diet; healthy weight; exercise and physical activity; tobacco-free lifestyle; blood pressure; cholesterol; blood sugar; and psychological health). “I have long-since promulgated that cardiology clinicians need to focus their efforts on prevention of cardiovascular risk factors, rather than treatments and therapies once the disease state expresses symptomology,” Fuster said.

JACC will also broaden its global reach by debuting three international editions in Mandarin, Portuguese and Spanish this year. Each will include translated JACC manuscripts selected for their relevance to these local communities, as well as original content.

At ACC.18, a record 15 abstracts being presented as posters, Featured Clinical Research and Late-Breaking Clinical Trials (LBCTs) will be simultaneously published in JACC and the JACC Journal family. JACC is also sponsoring one of the five LBCT sessions, and editors took part yesterday in an FIT-focused session on how to publish. Tomorrow, the “Best of JACC Journals and Eugene Braunwald Keynote” will take place from 12:30 – 1:45 p.m. in the Main Tent, Hall C.

“It is my intent and hope that JACC becomes synonymous with quality,” Fuster said.
