Message From ACC Secretary/BOG Chair Akshay Khandelwal, MD, FACC

Every year the ACC secretary and Board of Governors (BOG) chair plays the important role of calling Convocation to order, administering the oaths to new Fellows and Associates and officially adjourning the meeting.

While Convocation as we traditionally know it won't take place this year, the ACC would like to recognize Akshay Khandelwal, MD, FACC, for his service as secretary and BOG chair this past year.

Khandelwal is an interventional cardiologist at Henry Ford Hospital, where he serves as associate division head of cardiology. He has been active in the ACC since becoming a Fellow in 2007.

He was selected as a member of the ACC Emerging Faculty program (Class of 2012) and has served on the ACC Scientific Session Planning Committee as Acute and Stable Ischemic Heart Disease pathway chair, the ACC Accreditation Services Chest Pain Subcommittee, and the ACC BOG Steering Committee, as well as on the American Heart Association Hospital Accreditation Cardiovascular Subcommittee.

Prior to becoming ACC secretary and BOG chair, Khandelwal served as governor for ACC's Michigan Chapter. He currently serves as chair of the ACC Digital Transformation Task Force.

He has the following message for incoming Fellows and Associates:

Normally, Convocation is pomp and circumstance as you take your final steps towards becoming part of the greatest professional community on Earth. Normally, your friends, family and colleagues are witness to a grand spectacle overflowing with honor and recognition. Normally, the pageantry and gallantry is followed by mirthful laughter, smiles and celebration, and perhaps a bubbly drink.

This is not your normal Convocation. This is ACC's most memorable Convocation. And you're the central part of it.

As you take your FACC or AACC oaths, remember that you now belong to a greater collective of cardiovascular professionals, the best and brightest. Remember all the challenges, trials and tribulations you had to overcome to get to this one aspirational moment.

You are now part of a team whose mission is to transform cardiovascular care and improve heart health. A team whose vision is a world where innovation and knowledge optimize cardiovascular care and outcomes. A team that is guided by patient centeredness, teamwork and collaboration, and professionalism and excellence.

Not even the greatest health care challenge in our generation can take that away from you.

So have that bubbly drink. Share your smiles and celebration on social media. Enjoy a little levity. You deserve this.

Congratulations.
