Global Mo-99 and I-131 Shortages Expected Due to Reactor BR2 Closure

Global supply disruptions of medical radioisotopes Mo-99 and I-131 are anticipated due to the delayed restart of Reactor BR2 following scheduled maintenance, according to a notice published Nov. 8 by Nuclear Medicine Europe.

Supply shortages are expected through the third week of November, with the projected reactor start date on Nov. 17. The American Society of Nuclear Cardiology (ASNC) has indicated that some radiopharmacies may be unaffected by the reactor shutdown, while others may have challenges meeting demand.

ASNC recommends reaching out to all radiopharmacies in your area and adjusting patient scheduling if necessary. ACC will provide updates as new information emerges.
