ACC Leaders Named to Inaugural FDA Digital Health Advisory Committee

Ami B. Bhatt, MD, FACC Thomas M. Maddox, MD, MSc, FACC

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on Aug. 1 the roster for the agency's Digital Health Advisory Committee. Among the new appointees was ACC Chief Innovation Officer Ami B. Bhatt, MD, FACC, who will serve as committee chair, and ACC Trustee Thomas M. Maddox, MD, MSc, FACC.

"I'm thrilled to serve on this committee," says Maddox. "Digital health is a critical and growing tool for effective cardiovascular care. It's essential that the FDA and other regulators ensure its safe use without stifling innovation. I'm looking forward to working with my colleagues to achieve that goal."

The committee will meet Nov. 20-21 to discuss the potential impact of generative artificial intelligence (AI) on the safety and effectiveness of medical devices and consider risks and benefits of the use of AI-enabled devices in the clinical setting.

"The increase of medical information from scientific advances to patient medical records and drivers of health is exponential," says Bhatt. "Addressing generative AI at our first meeting is timely as we explore solutions and seek expert recommendations on effective implementation of this rapidly advancing technology."

Those completing training will now receive the following discounted renewal fees, and will not pay full dues until their fifth year out of training:

  • 75% off first year + complimentary Early Career Section membership

ACC Innovation Program Releases New RPM Workbook

ooooo

Protocols, best practices and practical insights to help clinicians successfully navigate remote patient management (RPM) are the focus of a new workbook released by the ACC Innovation Program.

With an increase in patients using consumer-grade RPM devices, such as smartwatches and other wearables, alongside a growing prevalence of advanced computer platforms that facilitate real-time tracking of data trends, the workbook addresses several foundational topics, including categories of current RPM technology, objectives of RPM, and the current evidence-base surrounding RPM. It also aims to help practices determine whether they are ready for RPM utilization and provides considerations about how to set up an RPM program.

The workbook is part of ongoing efforts by the ACC Innovation Program to provide clinicians with best practices for using direct-to-consumer devices as a tool for patient care. Access all the workbooks, along with the new AI Resource Center, at ACC.org/InnovationProgram.
