Each year, a limited number of travel awards are provided to encourage ACC's Fellows in Training (FITs) and Early Career Professionals to attend the Annual Scientific Session. Athena then was able to offer him support and guidance through his father's absence. This article title may sound like the subject line of one of the countless emails you get every day and conveniently delete without a second thought (if you are me). However, this is a question I was forced to ask myself. Just so everyone is on the same page, a locum job is a short-term job with variable requirements. As a cardiologist, you may be asked to cover night call, weekend coverage or an entire week for a group or practice. What you end up doing depends completely on what kind of coverage the group needs. As such, your pay rates also depend upon how intensive and busy your coverage is.

On Valentine’s Day 1994, I was 5 years old and carefully crafting a card for my grandparents in art class. I remember gluing a white lace heart onto a red sheet of construction paper, excited to share my masterpiece. My grandfather picked me up from the bus stop that afternoon. Once home, he held his chest and reported pain. He tragically died in route to the hospital from a massive myocardial infarction at the age of 61. While I cannot recall if my grandfather’s early death was the impetus for my longstanding aspiration to become a cardiologist, it undoubtedly influenced my interest in preventive cardiology.

While the impact of cancer treatments on cardiovascular health is an important consideration when treating cancer patients, only 35 percent of centers in a nationwide survey included cardio-oncology services managed by general cardiology, according to a Council Perspective published June 22 in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
