CMS Releases Proposed Rule on Prior Authorization

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released a proposed rule on Dec. 6 aimed at improving interoperability and prior authorizations in Medicare Advantage and other programs through the adoption of e-prior authorization programs.

The proposed rule closely follows provisions in the Improving Seniors' Timely Access to Care Act, a priority bill for ACC Advocacy that if enacted would minimize administrative burden by streamlining prior authorizations for Medicare Advantage patients while increasing process transparency.

For more information, access the CMS press release and related fact sheet. ACC staff are currently examining the proposed rule and will submit formal comments and participate in other advocacy efforts by the March 13 deadline.
