ACC Connecticut Chapter's WIC Educational Program Recap: "Cardiology For The Internist"

Ayesha Shaik, MD

The ACC Connecticut Chapter's Women in Cardiology (WIC) Committee organized an in-person educational program, "Cardiology for the Internist, What Every Provider Needs to Know," in May. As a Fellow in Training (FIT) member of the Committee, I am happy to share my experience.

The cardiology topics were catered to help the internist in their day-to-day patient care and management. Topics included preventive cardiology, risk factor modification, management and work up of common cardiac conditions such as atrial fibrillation, heart failure, hyperlipidemia and chest pain evaluation. Special attention was also given to cardiac amyloidosis and cardio-obstetrics.

A session on cardiac point of care ultrasound was a huge hit amongst the medical residents. We had an eye-opening talk from Colleen Harrington, MD, FACC, on sex disparities in cardiology. She not only addressed the disparities in cardiovascular care in women across all age groups but also spoke on how we can work towards a better tomorrow and "level the playing field." She also spoke about improving the number of women involved in clinical trials, making cardiovascular care in women part of fellowship educational curriculums, use of artificial intelligence, electronic health record use in identifying high-risk women and community level education and awareness.

The event was very well attended by not only internists and medical residents, but also by cardiologist and advanced practitioners. The sessions were interactive with lots of discussion on cardio-obstetrics, chest pain management in young women and lipid management. I was able to meet and interact with aspiring future cardiologists and answer their questions about life as a cardiology fellow.

After the COVID-19 pandemic, it was refreshing to meet with friends and colleagues and have a wonderful educational experience. The event would not have been possible without Stephanie Saucier, MD, FACC, and ACC Connecticut Chapter WIC Committee member, Carolyn B. Martindale, MS. The event was very well-received by all attendees and we look forward to another wonderful session next year!
