Douglas P. Zipes Distinguished Young Scientist Award
Description:
To recognize a young scientist who has made outstanding contributions to the field of cardiovascular medicine and who has amassed an impressive body of scientific research in either the clinical or basic domain.
Eligibility:
The recipient must be no more than five years out of training from an accredited U.S. institution or comparable international training program.
The Award:
The recipient will be invited to present his or her scientific work at the Annual Scientific Session of the College. He or she will also be recognized at the annual Convocation of the College and receive a monetary prize of $1,000. Travel, housing and registration expenses to attend ACC Scientific Sessions will also be provided.
Nomination Procedure:
Nominations are invited from the following:
  • U.S. and international cardiovascular organizations
  • U.S. and international medical schools and/or cardiology departments

To submit a nomination, the following must be received by October 3, 2008:

  • A nominating letter summarizing the curriculum vitae, highlighting those accomplishments that are relevant to the award
  • Three supporting letters
  • Nominee’s CV
  • Nominee’s list of top 10 (ten) publications
  • Description of nominee’s research interests and professional experience

Member Recognition Awards

Procedures for submitting nominations for the Distinguished Fellowship, Distinguished Scientist, Distinguished Service, Gifted Teacher, and Honorary Fellowship Awards: The person writing the primary letter of nomination should summarize the nominee's curriculum vitae, highlighting those accomplishments that are relevant to the specific award.

Letters of support should be limited to ten consisting of the following: No more than three from former or current trainees, no more than three from colleagues or associates who work in the same institution or who practice in the same community, and no more than four "outside" letters from fellows of the College who do not fit into the two categories mentioned.

Supporting letters should cite specific examples of contributions that qualify the candidate for the award. A candidate may be proposed for an award no more than three consecutive years. Listed are criteria for the various awards of the American College of Cardiology.

Distinguished Fellowship Award
Description:
Recognition of a Fellow of the College for his/her service to the College and whose activities are considered to qualify him/her as a role model for others.
Eligibility:
Fellows of the College who have given service to the College and whose activities are considered to qualify him/her as a role model for others. (Former College presidents are not eligible for this award.)
The Award:
Coach airfare for the winner, concierge level hotel accommodations, and daily expenses. A plaque is presented to the winner at the Convocation Ceremony during the ACC Annual Scientific Session. ACC membership dues are waived for life.

Distinguished Scientist Award
Description:
Recognition of a Fellow of the College who has made major scientific contributions to the advancement of scientific knowledge in the field of cardiovascular disease. Two awards may be given in this category. One award will be in the Clinical and one in the Basic domain.

Distinguished Service Award
Description:
Recognition to certain individuals, who by individual efforts has made profound contributions to medicine and/or the delivery of health care.
Eligibility:
Any physician, scientist, or layman who by individual efforts has made profound contributions to medicine and/or the delivery of health care. (Former College presidents are not eligible for this award.)
The Award:

Lifetime Achievement Award
Description:
The Lifetime Achievement Award of the American College of Cardiology (ACC) is presented each year to an individual who has had a lifetime of outstanding achievements in the field of cardiovascular disease and has served as a role model through service, basic or clinical research and teaching.
Eligibility:
The recipient of this award must have had a career spanning at least 30 years. Contributions should be recognized at local, national and international levels. The award is not open to former Presidents of the ACC and precedence should be given to senior Fellows who have not received other award.
The Award:
Coach airfare for the winner, concierge level hotel accommodations, and daily expenses. A plaque is presented to the winner at the Convocation ceremony during the ACC Annual Scientific Session.

Honorary Fellowship Award
Description:
Individual shall be a distinguished physician or scientist who is not a member of the College and who would not otherwise have routinely had an opportunity to pursue fellowship in the College, but whose professional performance warrants recognition by the College.

International Service Award
Description:

Master of American College of Cardiology
Description:

Individual will have been a dedicated fellow of the College for more than fifteen years. No more than four Master designations will be awarded each year and one of these four awards will recognize the outgoing president of the College.

Officers and Trustees of the College as individuals will be invited annually to nominate candidates for Master designation to the Awards Committee, which will make its recommendations to the Board of Trustees at its Fall meeting. The Awards Committee will not offer its own nominations and members are not eligible for Master designation while serving on the committee.

ACC/W. Proctor Harvey, MD, Young Teacher Awards
Description:

Two awards are presented annually for the purpose of identifying, recognizing young members of the College who have distinguished themselves by their dedication and skill in teaching, and to stimulate the awardees to continue their careers in education.

Eligibility:

Candidates must be Fellows or Associate Fellows of the College in good standing, who have not yet attained the academic rank of Professor.  Candidates should also be in a full-time academic position where there is a complement of medical students or house staff to be taught.  Exceptional talent and dedication to teaching will distinguish these awards.

The Award:

The W. Proctor Harvey, MD, Young Teacher Award winners will be selected from among those persons who are nominated for and participate in an ACCF Teaching Skills Workshop for Emerging Faculty.  Each Young Teacher Award winner will receive a plaque, and a cash award of $5,000 which will be presented at the annual Convocation of the College, and a travel award of $1,200 to cover travel expenses to attend the Annual Scientific Session and Convocation where the award will be presented.  The cash award is discretionary to the recipient.  The associated funds may be donated to the awardee’s institution to be used in the educational program or they may be retained for other uses by the awardee.

Submitting Nominations:

Letters of nomination will be submitted for the 2006 ACCF Teaching Skills Workshop for Emerging Faculty.  The following supporting materials should be included for each nominee to the Teaching Skills Workshop:

  • a curriculum vitae
  • a letter from the division chief (or equivalent) who is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, that summarizes the nominee’s teaching experience and qualifications;
  • three supporting letters from others who are familiar with the candidates’ teaching abilities, e.g., residents, fellows, faculty, etc.

ACCF 2006 Teaching Skills Workshop for Emerging Faculty
Description:

The success of the College’s education mission depends upon ongoing contributions from talented, expert faculty.  Emerging young teachers must be identified and brought into the ACCF teaching fold.  A generous grant from The Michael Wolk Heart Foundation is supporting a Teaching Skills Workshop for Emerging Faculty (“Educate the Educators”) to be held on October 5-6, 2006, in Washington, DC.  Travel, lodging and meal expenses will be paid for up to 20 emerging, talented faculty to attend this workshop.  The purpose of this workshop is to promote the development of skills for those emerging faculty who have a major commitment to education.

Two outstanding faculty from among this group of 2006 workshop participants will be selected at the conclusion of the program as recipients of the 2006 ACC W. Proctor Harvey, M.D., Young Teacher Award.  The Harvey Awards are presented annually for the purpose of identifying, recognizing and honoring young members of the College who have distinguished themselves by their dedication and skill in teaching, and to stimulate the awardees to continue their careers in education.  Each Harvey Award winner will receive a cash award of $5,000 to be used at his/her discretion, (2) a $1200 travel award to cover travel expenses to attend the College’s Annual Scientific Session in New Orleans on March 24-27, 2007, and (3) a plaque.

Eligibility:

Candidates must be Fellows or Associate Fellows of the American College of Cardiology in good standing, who have not yet attained the academic rank of professor.  Candidates should also be in a full-time academic position where there is a complement of medical students or house-staff to be taught.

The Award:

Each awardee will be reimbursed for all travel expenses associated with attending the 2006 Teaching Skills Workshop for Emerging Faculty.  The workshop objectives are that attendees will

  • understand and be able to use principles of “adult health professional learning and behavior change” in planning and delivering education;
  • understand and be able to use instructional design principles—including selection, design, and use of appropriate media—in planning and delivering education;
  • be effective presenters in face-to-face settings; and
  • be stimulated and express intent to participate enthusiastically as educators in at least one future ACCF activity.
Selection Criteria and Process:

Exceptional talent and dedication to teaching (assisting and supporting the learning process) will guide the selection of workshop attendees.  The workshop faculty will review all nominations and make final participant selections. The workshop faculty will also make the final selections of the Harvey Award winners.

The William W. Parmley Young Author Achievement Award
Description:
Named for Dr. William W. Parmley, Immediate Past Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC), this award will honor two young authors per year, by providing each award recipient with a stipend to be used to help defray the expenses of attending an ACC educational event. The award is underwritten by the publisher of JACC - Elsevier Science Inc.
Eligibility:
The nominee must be lead author on a paper that was published in JACC in the preceding year, and must have completed training less than 5 years before the date that the paper was submitted. The two papers selected will be those which, in the opinion of the JACC Editor and Associate Editors, best fulfill the standard criteria for acceptance for publication. These criteria include the paper's originality, methodology, presentation and importance.
The Award:
Stipend of $2,500 each to be used to help defray the expenses of attending an ACC educational event. Recognition at the Convocation Program, at the JACC Editorial Board meeting and in JACC. Both the award winner and his/her department will receive a plaque that acknowledges the accomplishment of the recipient.
Submitting Nominations:
There is no application form. As manuscripts are accepted, all papers in which the lead author has been out of training less than five years will automatically be considered.
