ACCF welcomes proposals on other topics that have emerged through your market research and needs assessment activities. The American College of Cardiology Foundation (ACCF) is a 501(c)3 professional membership association. The ACCF mission is to foster optimal cardiovascular care and disease prevention through professional education, promotion of research, leadership in the development of standards and guidelines and the formulation of health policy. The College provides a variety of products, services and programs to cardiovascular physicians and scientists from around the world. The College is a 33,000-member, nonprofit professional medical society and teaching institution for both U.S. and international cardiologists. ACCF members are cardiovascular specialists—adult cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, pediatric cardiologists, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and certified nurse specialists.
The mission of the American College of Cardiology Foundation is to advocate for quality cardiovascular care – through education, research promotion, development and application of standards and guidelines – and to influence health care policy. The purpose of the CME program is to provide a comprehensive and innovative program of high quality continuing education for cardiovascular health care professionals. The content of ACCF’s education activities is determined through continuous assessment of needs as derived from scientific advances in the field of cardiovascular medicine, clinical outcomes data to evaluate current practice, standards defined by practice guidelines and expert consensus statements, and perception of need by ACCF’s scientific experts and intended audiences. The scope of topics is broad and comprehensive, including information on basic science, clinical practice, practice management, socioeconomic considerations, and ethics. The individual activities encompassed by this scope are determined by member committees comprising experts as well as practicing cardiologists in the field of cardiovascular medicine. The expected results of the ACCF program of CME are to provide education that refreshes physicians and other health professionals on the underlying knowledge base of cardiovascular medicine, increases awareness and understanding of emerging basic and clinical science, provides opportunities for dialogue and debate with peers and experts on topics related to the clinical practice of cardiology, prepares physicians for initial and continuing certification in the field of cardiovascular medicine, furthers physician self-study and reflection on his/her clinical practice, and/or promotes and supports change in physician practice behavior as necessary to conform with established bodies of evidence and clinical practice guidelines in the field of cardiovascular medicine.
Innovation can be incorporated into the topic and/or the teaching methodologies and educational design used to convey the topic. The proposal should demonstrate how the activity will address physician behavior change with the use of innovative teaching and learning methods. The activity will be coordinated and managed by ACCF staff with all financial responsibility borne by the College.
The Course or Activity Director will be responsible for developing content, selecting faculty and ensuring the faculty meet their commitment to the activity. Along with staff, the Program Director will also make certain that the activity meets all ACCME and ANCC accreditation guidelines. A complete list of Program Director responsibilities is included as an Attachment to the Proposal Form. Final approvals will be based on objective peer review by the appropriate ACC education steering committee. All proposals are due a minimum of eight months before the proposed activity launch date, but earlier submissions are greatly encouraged.
The overall objective for the RFP and selection process are to: reach more members and invigorate the ACCF educational portfolio; provide a greater opportunity to introduce cutting edge topics in a shorter development and delivery timetable; create opportunities to incorporate new educational methods; afford greater opportunities to broaden and strengthen the faculty base while creating new opportunities for junior faculty; and penetrate the marketplace where gaps exist. The learner will benefit by convenient and cost effective education that minimizes travel and time away form home and office. All of these objectives will support the overarching goal of meeting learners’ needs.
In developing your proposal, keep in mind that effective medical education programming should:
- Relate the education to what is happening at the point of care and in the clinical practice
- Provide multiple opportunities for interactivity – the learner as “participant” rather than “observer
- Be based on real learning needs
- Provide feedback on learning
- Be designed to facilitate change in physician practice
- Have clearly identified messages that are repeated multiple times through multiple methods
- Include opportunities for self-assessment.
Goals Established for All ACCF Educational Programs
Programs must:
- Be designed for consistency with the principles of adult learning and be based on theories of physician behavior change
- Have specified outcomes that include improved physician clinical practice, when warranted, with the ultimate goal of improved patient care
- Have program content that is timely and relevant to clinical practice, with an emphasis on new developments in the field or an expert synthesis of current knowledge
When submitting your RFP, consider new education models and variations to current models for your proposal. The delivery method itself could represent the innovative aspect of the activity, i.e., virtual reality guidance in procedures, fusion displays for teaching cardiac EP, robotic assistance, simulation, etc. New activities do not need to comprise the entire activity; rather innovative features may be included within the context of a comprehensive activity.
Please submit your proposal electronically to Michelle Klinke at mklinke@acc.org. Proposals should be submitted at least eight months prior to proposed activity date(s). Questions can be directed to Michelle Klinke at (800) 253-4636, x6237.
