CardioSourceNews sat down with Tammy Plumb, MBA, CPA, administrator in the department of cardiology at Methodist DeBakey Cardiology Associates in Houston, to learn how she became involved with the ACC and what she's most looking forward to at ACC.12 in Chicago.

What are you looking most forward to about ACC.12? 
Methodist DeBakey Heart and Vascular Center is in a unique position. Not only do we get to see the inauguration of one of our faculty members, Dr. William Zoghbi, as ACC president this year, but our chief of cardiology, Dr. Miguel Quiñones, will be named a Master of the ACC as well. This is my third ACC conference as a member. I have seen the excellent administrative track grow from a half-day symposium to a comprehensive track that spans a few days, comprised of topics covering everything from coding to healthcare reform to academic research.

How did you initially become involved with the ACC? 
MDHVC faculty has always been actively involved in the ACC.  Working with our ACC members, I initially used CardioSource.org to find information about emerging issues and practice tools.  Through the site, I learned more about the ACC, its mission, and the wealth of resources it offers its members. And now that there is an administrative track, I am a member.

What has been the most interesting experience you’ve had at an ACC meeting in the past?
I have really enjoyed the ACC's selection of keynote presenters and panel discussions, many of which have helped shape my perspectives on a broad range of issues in health care. And I've benefited from opportunities to meet with my counterparts at other institutions, to discuss solutions to common challenges. These experiences have helped me do my job better, benefiting my organization and, more importantly, our patients.

What advice do you have for first-time meeting attendees?
Plan to attend the whole conference.  It is a unique opportunity to take in the latest and best information on key issues and to network with administrative and physician colleagues across the country and around the world. Take time to review the program planner tool. Browse the sessions offered and create a downloadable itinerary in advance of the conference.  Leave time to walk the expo floor to see all the new technology -- and to visit the Methodist DeBakey Heart and Vascular Center booth, of course! Most of all network and enjoy the conference!
