Tom Arend, ACC Executive VP, General Counsel and COO, Named CEO of American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons

Tom Arend, ACC executive vice president, general counsel and chief operating officer, has announced that he will be leaving the ACC effective March 31 to become the CEO of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) in Chicago, IL. Arend will begin this new role on April 1.

During his 13-year tenure at the College, Arend has been instrumental in leading the ACC through two CEO transitions, as well as its move from Heart House Bethesda to Heart House DC. Working with ACC leaders and staff, he has played key roles in developing and implementing the College’s relationship with industry standards and code of ethics, as well as its strategic plan and the more recent governance transformation. Arend is also responsible for a number of novel partnerships, including the recent addition of accreditation services to the College’s suite of hospital quality improvement offerings and a broader collaboration around hospital cardiac accreditation with the American Heart Association.

“For more than a decade, Tom has been a critical asset to the College, its members and its staff,” says ACC CEO Shal Jacobovitz. “His strategic vision, organizational awareness and legal acumen will be greatly missed.”
