ACC’s Electrophysiology (EP) Suite was created to provide a comprehensive set of tools to help hospitals measure EP lab performance and outcomes through the ICD Registry and AFib Ablation Registry. Last month, the College added a new EP Accreditation to the existing EP Suite to help create a strategy for sustainable performance improvement.

Since its inception in 2005, the ICD Registry has been the national standard for understanding patient selection care and outcomes in patients receiving ICD therapy. The ICD Registry provides nationally benchmarked feedback on quality of care and patient outcomes. Supported by the ICD Registry’s real-time data of more than 1.7 million implantations recorded from more than 1,800 institutions across the U.S., participation in the ICD Registry offers the tools to improve standards of care and ensure optimal use of ICD devices.

In 2016, the College launched the AFib Ablation Registry, which collects data on demographics, acute management, outcomes and other information for patients undergoing atrial fibrillation ablation procedures. Its data supports the development of evidence-based guidelines and quality metrics for atrial fibrillation treatments that will improve outcomes for patients.

The new EP Accreditation takes these registries to the next level by providing guidance and resources at every stage of treatment for standard interventions from noninvasive testing to ablative therapies to device implant management. The accreditation incorporates up-to-date guideline recommendations, procedure performance standards, and appropriate use criteria for procedures performed in the EP lab.

“Data from the ICD Registry and AFib Ablation Registry drive improvement by measuring gaps in clinical care, and EP Accreditation drives improvement by implementing evidence-based standards of care,” explains Kathleen Hewitt, DNP, RN, CPHQ, AACC, ACC associate vice president of Science and Quality.
