Senate Passes Children’s Hospital GME Legislation

On Dec. 6, the Senate passed S. 2597, the Children’s Hospital GME Support Reauthorization Act of 2018, sponsored by Sens. Bob Casey (D-PA) and Johnny Isakson (R-GA). The legislation reauthorizes the program of payments to children’s hospitals that run graduate medical education programs.

First enacted in 1999, the program provides funding for over 50 freestanding children’s hospitals around the country to support training for pediatricians and improve children’s access to care. Earlier in the year, the House passed companion legislation authorizing the funding through 2023.
