Kickstarting February With Cardio-Oncology and Business of Medicine
The ACC's 2024 live education schedule kicks off this month with the Cardiovascular Summit 2024 and Advancing the Cardiovascular Care of the Oncology Patient.
The Cardiovascular Summit brought together clinicians spanning the entire cardiovascular care team for critical dialogue around emerging trends like innovation, remote monitoring and private equity, as well as important issues surrounding operations and economics.
Plenary sessions addressed topics like the potential for artificial intelligence in cardiology, the process for creating a new, independent board of cardiovascular medicine, and the future of cardiovascular service line models, while workshop sessions dove into items like clinician wellness, making the most of clinical registries, coding changes, career flexibility, strategic planning, health equity and more.
In addition, the meeting featured 20 abstract posters highlighting best practices and new research tied to high value care delivery, quality improvement and implementation science.
"Abstracts are a hallmark of the Summit and present an important opportunity to share and discuss practical quality improvement and/or cost reduction strategies that can be applied in any clinical setting," said Cathleen C. Biga, MSN, FACC, co-director of the course, along with Howard T. Walpole Jr., MD, MBA, FACC, Thomas A. Draper, MBA, FACC, and Geoffrey A. Rose, MD, FACC.
With cancer remaining the second leading cause of death in the U.S., exceeded only by heart disease, the Advancing the Cardiovascular Care of the Oncology Patient course continues to provide an interdisciplinary forum for helping clinicians and researchers improve the cardiovascular health of cancer patients.
Led by course chairs Ana Barac, MD, PhD, FACC, and Bonnie Ky, MD, MSCE, FACC, and course vice chair Richard Cheng, MD, FACC, the comprehensive agenda includes a perspective from the Food and Drug Administration on how to keep pace with new drug development and safety and a joint session with the American Society of Clinical Oncology on breast cancer and contemporary implications.
Other education sessions provide unique opportunities to engage with experts and interactive case-based discussions on topics tied to stem cell transplantation, amyloidosis, hematological malignancies, lung cancer, adult survivors of childhood cancers, and more.
In addition to educational sessions and abstracts, an optional pre-conference session offers a look at "Pharmacology 101," as well as how to grow a career in this expanding field. Post-conference, sessions from the meeting will be available on ACC Anywhere – the College's revamped video library.

CMP 2024 Key Dates
The Collaborative Maintenance Pathway (CMP) is an alternative Maintenance of Certification (MOC) assessment option that allows clinicians to stay 100% certified by focusing on just 20% of the field each year.
Delivered through ACC's SAPs, the CMP includes comprehensive educational material, annual updates and all the CME/MOC credit necessary. A passing score on the CMP Performance Assessment every year satisfies the MOC assessment requirement and extends the assessment due date by one year.
Additionally, participation in the CMP is one way to ensure a seamless transition to a new Board of Cardiovascular Medicine, if it is approved.

COVID-19 in the Post-Pandemic Era
With COVID cases on the rise this winter, a new infographic and webinar look at the acute and long-term cardiovascular effects of the multi-systemic virus in the post-pandemic era, using updated data from the global burden of cardiovascular disease collaboration published in JACC.
The webinar, moderated by Gregory A. Roth, MD, MPH, FACC, and including Ziyad Al-Aly, MD; Jeroen J. Bax, MD, PhD, FACC; and Sarah Wulf Hanson, PhD, MPH, highlights the key cardiovascular sequelae of COVID, including myocardial injury, thrombosis, arrhythmia and long COVID and dives into opportunities to address the ongoing complexities of the global virus.
Tied to coordinate with the webinar, the infographic illustrates the three actionable steps the webinar speakers say are most important when it comes to tackling COVID in today's environment. Long-term understanding of the disease through data collection, research and measurement is the first step, followed by identification of the most important diagnostic and prognostic criteria and better elucidation of disease mechanism. Third, development of new therapies based on the new knowledge identified in steps one and two.
Additionally, the webinar speakers stress not to "underestimate the importance of global health policies and public education on the benefits of vaccination and antivirals."

Calling All Authors
JACC: Advances and JACC: Heart Failure are seeking papers on artificial intelligence (AI) in cardiology and heart failure and obesity management, respectively.
With AI increasingly showing promise when it comes to enhancing cardiovascular care delivery, JACC: Advances is seeking pragmatic clinical trials and studies that leverage AI to address bias, ethical challenges, model governance, and/or health system/payer strategies for evaluating value. The research will be included in a special issue tentatively scheduled for September 2024 that aims to showcase the potential opportunities for AI to improve outcomes for all cardiovascular patients. The deadline for submissions is March 1.
On the heart failure front, JACC: Heart Failure is accepting submissions through March 25 that focus on strategies for the prevention and management of patients with, or at risk of, both obesity and heart failure. Papers can be in the form of original research, clinical trials, meta-analysis, research letters, implementation perspectives, leading edge commentaries, state-of-the-art reviews or position statements.
