Dr. Glenn N. Levine is Master Clinician and Professor of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. Dr. Levine is recognized locally, regionally, nationally and internationally for his teaching, lecturing, and educational abilities, and for his expertise in cardiovascular disease, including acute coronary syndromes (heart attack), acute and critical cardiac care, coronary revascularization (stenting) and guidelines on cardiovascular care. Dr. Levine has held many clinical positions while at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), including Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC), MEDVAMC Chief of Critical Care Cardiology, MEDVAMC Director of the Coronary Care Unit, MEDVAMC Chair of the CPR Committee, MEDVAMC Co-Chair of the Critical Care Committee, MEDVAMC Medical Director of ACLS Instruction, MEDVCAMC Director of Cardiac CT Imaging Program, and MEDVAMC Director, Ambulatory and Stress Electrocardiography. Dr. Levine is the recipient of 6 Baylor College of Medicine Fulbright & Jaworski, and Norton Rose Fulbright, faculty excellence awards, including those in teaching, educational leadership, and enduring educational materials. He was awarded the prestigious Baylor College of Medicine Master Clinician Lifetime Award, recognizing his clinical skills and abilities to educate others on the management of patients with cardiovascular disease. In 2019, Dr. Levine was awarded the Robertson Presidential Award for Educational Excellence, Baylor College of Medicine’s highest and most prestigious award. Dr. Levine’s clinical and educational leadership have also been recognized by the American Heart Association, who awarded him their Distinguished Achievement Award, and by the American College of Cardiology, who selected him to receive the prestigious Gifted Educator Award, a national award bestowed upon only one cardiologist each year. Dr. Levine has authored or edited a total of 13 educational textbooks and handbooks, including books on ECG and arrhythmia diagnosis and treatment, medical pharmacotherapy, evaluation and treatment of common cardiovascular conditions, and a 1000+ page textbook and atlas on cardiovascular disease. Several of these books have additionally been published internationally in different languages, including Russian, Lithuanian, Vietnamese, and Spanish. He has authored or co-authored a total of 73 book chapters and 71 medical journal articles, and written or been featured in 21 electronic or web-based educational programs, including webinars and audio programs. Dr. Levine has led and first-authored six American Heart Association Scientific Statements, including the management of patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (coronary stenting), sexual activity in patients with heart disease, mediation and cardiovascular risk reduction, and pet ownership and cardiovascular risk. He served as chair of the writing group of the 2011 American College of Cardiology (ACC)/American Heart Association (AHA) Guideline on PCI, chair of the 2016 ACC/AHA Guideline Focused Update on Duration of DAPT (when and how long to treat patients with cardiovascular disease with antiplatelet therapies), and co-chair of the 2015 ACC/AHA/SCAI Guideline Focused Update on Primary PCI (treating patients with STEMI), as well as serving as a writing group member of the 2014 ACC/AHA Guideline for the Management of Patients with NSTE-ACS (“non-STEMI”), and the 2014 ACC/AHA Guideline Focused Update on the Management of Patients with Stable Ischemic Heart Disease. These national guidelines and scientific statements educate practitioners on the best, and recommended, treatments of patients with cardiovascular disease. Dr. Levine was selected from among all the cardiologists throughout the country to serve as chair of the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association Task Force on Clinical Practice Guidelines, leading and supervising all of the nation’s cardiovascular guidelines. His two year term began in January 2017 and is finishing in December 2018. During this time, Dr. Levine completely overhauled the format and presentation of guidelines, making them more user-friendly to front-line practitioners, and initiated important new guidelines on the evaluation of chest pain and the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease. Dr. Levine has additionally served on numerous other national educational-based committees, including chairing the American Heart Association’s Committee of Diagnostic and Therapeutic Catheterization, and chairing the American Heart Association’s Planning Committee for the Interventional Fellows and Cardiologists Symposium. Throughout his career at Baylor College of Medicine, Dr. Levine has mentored dozens of BCM residents and fellows, and involved them, as well as numerous BCM junior staff, in the numerous national documents he has lead, committees he has served on and chaired, and dozens of book chapters he has invited them to co-author with him. Socially, Dr. Levine is a passionate advocate of animal rescue and adoption, and the humane treatment of animals, belonging to over a dozen such advocate and animal rescue organizations (in addition to having 3 rescue dogs himself), and practices a balanced approach to life, including meditation and mindfulness.
