WASHINGTON (June 5, 2019) — American College of Cardiology President Richard J. Kovacs, MD, FACC, made the following statement on bipartisan legislation announced today that would protect patients from unreasonable prior authorization requirements that delay or deny access to care.

"Prior authorization requirements pose a significant challenge to ensuring the right treatment for the right patient at the right time. Over the last several years the ACC has been working with stakeholders across the health care environment to find solutions that improve patient care and reduce administrative burden on the clinicians who serve them. The bipartisan prior authorization legislation announced today is an important step in making sure that patient care comes first."

The American College of Cardiology is part of the Regulatory Relief Coalition, a group of eight national physician specialty organizations advocating for a reduction in Medicare program regulatory burdens to protect patients' timely access to care and allow physicians to spend more time with their patients.
