WASHINGTON (Oct 09, 2025) -

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of maternal mortality in the United States and rates are rising when paired with the burden of pre-existing cardiovascular disease and risk factors associated with increasing maternal age. Taking place in Washington and virtually on Oct. 17-19, 2025, American College of Cardiology (ACC) Cardio-Obstetrics Essentials: Team-Based Management of Cardiovascular Disease and Pregnancy course focuses on the evolving field of cardio-obstetrics to ensure better diagnosis and treatment of child-bearing age patients.

“We, as cardiologists, cardiovascular team members, obstetricians and maternal fetal medicine specialists, anesthesiologists, and the entire maternal fetal care team have the opportunity and responsibility to improve outcomes for a growing number of pregnant people with and at risk for heart disease. Cardio-obstetrics is a vital and expanding subspecialty because we're seeing an increasing number of people with congenital or acquired heart conditions in their child-bearing years,” said course chair Natalie Bello, MD, MPH, FACC. “The knowledge and skills gained from this course are essential for all of us as cardiovascular disease remains a leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality. By advancing our knowledge, research and education in this field, we directly contribute to saving lives and ensuring healthier futures for both mothers and their babies.”

Attendees will learn how to improve maternal and fetal/neonatal outcomes through up-to-date, evidence-based guidance on the evaluation, risk assessment, clinical management and treatment of individuals with or at risk for cardiovascular disease during pregnancy. Must see sessions include:

  • An Ounce of Prevention: Why Preconception Counseling and Interpregnancy Care Matter
  • Just Say No! (To Using the Wrong Drugs in Pregnancy): Cardio-Obstetric Pharmacotherapy featuring a keynote by Annette K. Ansong, MD, FACC, medical director of outpatient cardiology at Children’s National Hospital in Washington
  • Decomposing Disparities in Pregnancy Care
