CMMI Releases Request For Information on Future Episode-Based Payment Model

The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) on July 14 released a request for information for input on the design of a future episode-based payment model, aiming to build on lessons learned from the health care community’s experience with the Bundled Payments for Care Improvement (BPCI), Bundled Payments for Care Improvement Advanced (BPCI Advanced) and other models.

This new model will focus on accountability for quality and cost, health equity and specialty integration. CMMI is also asking for insights and experiences with bundled payments from frontline administrators and practitioners.

Instead of seeking feedback on models that address particular conditions over a longer period of time, this request for information is looking for input on a broader set of questions related to care delivery and incentive structure alignment around six foundational components:

  • Clinical Episodes
  • Participants
  • Health Equity
  • Quality Measures, Interoperability and Multi-Payer Alignment
  • Payment Methodology and Structure
  • Model Overlap

In addition to maintaining or improving quality of care and reducing Medicare spending, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services intends to test an episode-based payment model with goals to both improve care transitions for the beneficiary and increase engagement of specialists within value-based, accountable care.

ACC Advocacy staff are currently reviewing the request for information and will provide additional information relevant to cardiovascular clinicians in the coming weeks.
