Meetings and Events | Highlights of ACC.15: Congratulations to Athena Poppas, MD, FACC, and Pamela Douglas, MD, MACC!

This post was authored by Dee Dee Wang, MD, FACC, senior staff cardiologist, Advanced Structural Heart Imaging at the Henry Ford Heart and Vascular Institute in Detroit, MI.

The 64th Annual American College of Cardiology (ACC.15) Opening Session was inspiring in many ways. From the recognition of 3D printing technology as one of the top five research advancements in 2015, to the introduction of the new scientific session, "Futures of Cardiovascular Medicine, " this year's meeting flowed more like a "TED talk," —breaking traditional scientific meeting molds.

Two key moments occurred without recognition. During the opening sessions, Athena Poppas, MD, FACC, was introduced to help deliver opening remarks and recognized for her work as co-chair of ACC's Annual Scientific Session. Following her talk, the first late-breaking clinical trial—the much awaited results of the PROMISE study—was delivered by Pamela Douglas, MD, MACC. It is rare for women to serve as principal investigators of multi-center clinical trials, and co-chairs of national scientific meetings.

Congratulations to Dr. Poppas and Dr. Douglas on their scientific and career accomplishments! Your achievements were a moment of inspiration for women in cardiology.
