American College of Cardiology CEO Jack Lewin, MD, commended Rep. Phil Roe, R-Tenn., for performing CPR to save a man’s life at the Charlotte, NC, airport and offered to name him “Cardiologist for a Day.”  Roe is a physician who practiced as an obstetrician for 30 years before running for Congress.

In a letter of commendation, Dr. Lewin praised the actions of Roe and another physician who began CPR and administered defibrillation in the airport shortly after he collapsed.

“Effective CPR provided immediately can double or triple a victim’s chance of survival,” Lewin said in the letter to Roe. “Another important part of the chain of survival is the use of Automated External Defibrillators to restore a normal heart rhythm. As you witnessed, new technology has made AEDs simple and user-friendly.”
