WASHINGTON (November 7, 2014) —American College of Cardiology (ACC) President Patrick O’Gara, M.D., FACC, made the following statement regarding new FDA research on the risks of cigar smoking.

“As November is Lung Cancer Awareness month, it is especially appropriate for the FDA to release a new study on the risks of cigar smoking. In addition to the obvious issues of lung-related health, smoking is a leading – and preventable – cause of heart disease in the United States. As pointed out in the ACC’s comments on the proposed tobacco deeming rule in August 2014, this study highlights the need to regulate all cigars, including premium ones, to protect the public health.”
