Dr. Akshay Khandelwal Named Chair of ACC Board of Governors

Khandelwal will serve one-year term leading ACC’s grassroots governing body

Akshay Khandelwal, MD, FACC, has been named chair of the American College of Cardiology Board of Governors and secretary of the Board of Trustees, the main governing body of the ACC, for 2019-2020. His term begins today as the ACC’s 68th Annual Scientific Session ends in New Orleans.

Khandelwal will lead 66 governors from chapters representing all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Canada, Mexico and the U.S. Uniformed Services. The BOG is the grassroots governing body of the College.

“The ACC’s chapters serve as a voice of the cardiovascular community at the local level,” said Khandelwal. “By serving as the Board of Governors’ chair for the next year, I will have the opportunity to serve ACC’s members—clinicians at every level in their career to CV service line members—in a completely new way. I am honored to represent our members and do my part to help the cardiovascular community achieve our shared mission of transforming cardiovascular care and improving heart health, not just here in the United States but around the world.”

Since becoming a Fellow of the ACC in 2007, Khandelwal has been an active member throughout his career at the state, national and international level. He was a member of the ACC Emerging Faculty program and co-authored several chapters on reperfusion therapies in ACCSAP and CathSAP—ACC educational products. At the conclusion of ACC.19 he completes his term as governor of the ACC-Michigan Chapter. He currently serves on the ACC BOG Steering Committee, the ACCPAC Executive Board, the ACC Membership Committee and the ACC Board of Trustees.

Khandelwal is an interventional cardiologist with Henry Ford Health System, practicing at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit and Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital in southeast Michigan. He specializes in transradial/complex percutaneous coronary intervention and serves as the associate division head of cardiology. Within the Henry Ford Medical Group, he is a member of HFMG Operations Council, HFMG BOG Population Health Committee and the Henry Ford Physicians Network Clinical Integration Committee, among others. He is also the Chair of the HFMG BOG Finance Committee. Additionally, he chairs the state of Michigan's STEMI Systems of Care Taskforce.  

Upon graduating from Bangalore University in 1998, Khandelwal completed his internal medicine residency, chief residency, general cardiology fellowship and interventional cardiology fellowship at Henry Ford Hospital. He is board certified in cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology.
