Precision Prevention: Moving Beyond Traditional Risk Scores
Webinar Overview
Join ACC's Academic Cardiology and Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease Member Sections to explore the shift from traditional risk scores to direct disease detection using coronary artery calcium (CAC), biomarkers and precision imaging.
As cardiovascular prevention evolves, clinicians are increasingly caught between traditional probabilistic risk calculators and the emerging era of direct disease detection. This webinar, a collaboration between ACC's Academic Cardiology and Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease Member Sections, provides a comprehensive look at the evidence and application of modern risk stratification. The session begins with a deep dive into the academic and methodological foundations of risk prediction and then will evaluate the statistical strengths and limitations of traditional models while identifying the evidence-based "knowledge gaps" in the use of CAC, apolipoprotein B (apoB) and lipoprotein(a) (Lp[a]).
The focus then shifts to clinical implementation, exploring how to translate these biomarkers and imaging tools into actionable care. Participants will learn when to move beyond the standard lipid panel to identify hidden risks and how to utilize CAC scoring to reclassify risk, guide treatment decisions and enhance shared decision-making with patients.
Key Objectives/Learning Outcomes:
- Evidence-Based Foundations: Critically assess the validity of traditional risk models vs. direct disease detection and the current state of evidence for newer biomarkers.
- Precision Lipid Management: Determine specific clinical scenarios that warrant the use of apoB and Lp(a) to identify residual cardiovascular risk.
- Imaging-Guided Strategy: Understand the strategic use of CAC and atherosclerosis imaging to individualize prevention strategies and improve patient engagement.
