Learn how health care legislation affects cardiovascular care and discover opportunities for medical students to get involved in ACC Advocacy and the ACC Legislative Conference.

Medical students interested in cardiology often receive extensive education about the clinical management of cardiovascular disease but may have limited exposure to the legislative and public health policies that affect cardiovascular care and patient outcomes. Issues such as increasing prevention efforts, strengthening rural health care access, addressing medical student loan debt and expanding health equity play a role in improving heart health for all and strengthening the cardiovascular clinician workforce.

This webinar, hosted by ACC's Fellows in Training Member Section's Medical Students Work Group, will introduce medical students and trainees to advocacy. Participants will learn how clinicians and medical students can get involved in advocacy and policy discussions at the ACC. The webinar will highlight opportunities to participate in ACC Advocacy initiatives and the ACC Legislative Conference, taking place Oct. 4-6, in Washington, DC. Additionally, hear from and connect with ACC Advocacy staff and members who represent the ACC at the American Medical Association House of Delegates.

Key Objectives/Learning Outcomes:

1. Describe how health care legislation and public health policy affect cardiovascular care and patient outcomes.
2. Identify major policy issues related to prevention efforts, strengthening rural health care access, addressing medical student loan debt and expanding health equity.
3. Explain the role clinicians and medical students can play in health care advocacy and policy discussions.
4. Recognize opportunities to become involved in ACC Advocacy, legislative education and public health initiatives.
5. Discuss the ACC Legislative Conference and identify ways medical students can participate in future advocacy activities.
