Editors’ Corner | A Season For All Things
As we head into the holiday season and close out the year, we want to sincerely thank all our readers and contributors for another remarkable year that included celebrating the College's 75th Anniversary, launching a new Strategic Plan, recognizing our 40-year partnership with the American Heart Association in developing clinical guidelines, and so much more.
Over the last year, the pages of Cardiology have also featured inside looks at new and emerging treatments and therapies, including the GLP-1 RA class of drugs like semaglutide which are reshaping treatment in heart failure, especially among patients with obesity.
We've also explored important topics such as the global burden of disease; health equity and social determinants of health; the business of medicine; workforce challenges and solutions; clinician well-being; roles for artificial intelligence in medicine; and the importance of advocacy.
We've also paid homage to cardiovascular leaders new and old, highlighted practice-changing medicine from major cardiovascular meetings, and summarized the latest clinical guidelines and top clinical trials published in the pages of JACC and other peer-reviewed scientific journals.
We are closing out the year, with his month's cover story looking at new science surrounding the nature and treatment of takotsubo syndrome, once called broken heart syndrome, which affects between 2% to 3% of all patients and 5% to 6% of all women who present with what looks like an acute coronary syndrome.
"Over time, we've come to realize that takotsubo is triggered by things other than emotional stress," says Scott W. Sharkey, MD, FACC. "Specifically, it's increasingly recognized in the hospital setting, triggered by a variety of acute noncardiac illnesses."
Also in this issue, read about examples of ACC Education in action, all part of the College's strategic efforts to personalize educational experiences, focus on clinical competence and address knowledge gaps; dive into new science from TCT 2024; explore the potential for ablation in ventricular arrhythmias; learn how FITs can help with diversifying clinical trials; and get the inside scoop on trends that are transforming the business of cardiology.
In addition, Click here to get up to speed on the final Medicare physician fee schedule and hospital outpatient prospective payment rules for 2025.
Finally, it's also flu season and we encourage you to download the new clinician infographic explaining the cardiovascular benefits of high-dose flu vaccines for patients who are 65 and older.
As we head into the New Year, we look forward to continuing to serve as your trusted source for news, updates and perspectives on key trends and issues that impact our shared commitment to creating a world where science, knowledge and innovation optimize patient care and outcomes.
