Experts Analysis Articles Assess the Geriatric Population With AS

In two recent Expert Analysis articles published on ACC.org, Lydia R. Engwenyu, MD, and Luis A. Guzman, MD, FACC, defend the need to move to a comprehensive assessment of the geriatric population with aortic stenosis (AS). In their first Expert Analysis article on cardiac conditions in geriatric patients with AS, they say, “AS is a disease mainly affecting the elderly, and definitive management requires procedural intervention. The lack of definitive management and poor outcomes are often thought to be age-related. Navigating the nuances of this situation to achieve a satisfactory outcome makes the assessment and treatment of this population both complex and rewarding.” In a second Expert Analysis article, Drs. Engwenyu and Guzman discuss the assessment and treatment of patients with AS interacting with non-cardiac conditions, including chronic kidney disease (CKD), Paget's disease of the bone, osteoporosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and other integrated and neurocognitive syndromes. Take a Patient Case Quiz to test your knowledge of the next best step in managing a 77-year-old patient with recently discovered AS and past medical history of hypertension, dyslipidemia, hypertension and stage III CKD.
