As part of its ongoing strategic focus on purposeful education, the American College of Cardiology’s (ACC) Competency Management Committee has drafted the ACC Lifelong Learning Competencies for General Cardiologists. The Committee is seeking public comments on the draft which is the first document of its kind to combine medical knowledge, patient care and procedural skill competencies across 18 clinical areas in conjunction with administrative, leadership, and professional competencies. The document is organized topically with competencies expected of all clinical cardiologists, as well as some selected competencies for selected cardiologists based on background, specialized knowledge, skills, experience and career-focus; however, the document does not include advanced competencies specific to sub-subspecialties that require training beyond that which is required of the general cardiologist. Patients and accrediting bodies can reasonably expect clinical cardiologists in practice to maintain or enhance these competencies through lifelong learning. The ACC plans to use these topics to provide a structure for both the ACC learning pathways and the College’s educational activities in general. Comments will be accepted until Nov. 20.
