"Roving Reporters" Share Their ACC.18 and NCDR.18 Experiences

The CV Team invited members attending ACC.18 and NCDR.18 to become "roving reporters" and share their meeting experiences. Read first-hand reports on how members were impacted by these events, and how they plan to take what they learned and change their practice.

ACC.18:

"The focus on shared decision making in medicine has grown dramatically, and ACC.18 had great emphasis on this topic. Shared decision making was highlighted in many presentations and included as a simulation section during the meeting."

  • Sheena Toline, PharmD, BCPS, clinical manager at the Hospital Corporation of America in Nashville, TN.

"This was my first time attending ACC's annual meeting and I was excited to experience everything. I arrived Thursday, March 8, and was able to relax and explore the city of Orlando. The following afternoon, I attended the CV Team Section meeting where I networked with other members and learned more about my responsibilities as a state liaison. I downloaded the ACC.18 app on my phone (which I highly recommend everyone to do) and it was instrumental in planning my days. Day one started with a very motivating keynote speaker. Next, it was time for poster presentations, and I won first place! I was so excited and could not believe it! The rest of the day was filled with watching Jeopardy games and learning so much. Day two and three consisted of classes, visiting the Expo Hall and networking with colleagues at the CV Team reception. The conference was amazing and I left with lots of knowledge about the updated practice guidelines, which I will use to change my practice and improve patient care. ACC is the most supportive, educational and inspirational group that I have ever been a member of. I look forward to my future with ACC and all the opportunities it has to share. I already cannot wait to see everyone in New Orleans for ACC.19!"

  • Sharon M. Morgan, NP, nurse practitioner at the Banner University Medical Center in Tucson, AZ

NCDR.18:

"The NCDR.18 opening general session was a great start to the conference. ACC President C. Michael Valentine, MD, FACC, gave an engaging speech on how NCDR was progressing to meet the demands of a changing health care environment. I found it quite meaningful to hear him speak on NCDR efforts to develop quality improvement advancements that will ensure we are delivering the best care to patients. Additionally, in an era of increasing demands on the utilization and interpreting of our hospitals electronic health record data, I found the keynote lecture by Douglas B. Fridsma, MD, PhD, titled "Interoperability: A Promise Kept (or not) to Transform Healthcare" to be enlightening and timely. Fridsma explained the obstacles and opportunities of streamlining our health record information to facilitate structured and automated data collection."

  • Elizabeth B. McNeely, PharmD, BCPS, AQ, director of cardiovascular service at the Hospital Corporation of America in Nashville, TN.

"Douglas B. Fridsma, MD, PhD, gave an excellent lecture on the importance of health information technology interoperability in the context of real life facilities and examples."

  • Sheena Toline, PharmD, BCPS, clinical manager at the Hospital Corporation of America in Nashville, TN.

"Judy Tingley, DNP, MPH, RN, AACC, did a great job on the session titled "Effective Data Presentation to Drive Change." Her speech was exactly what I was looking for out of the session. I enjoyed the theme and great messages about cost transparency and what leaders need to effectively run the business."

  • Sophia Chaidez, corporate director of cardiovascular services at the Hospital Corporation of America in Nashville, TN.

"I really enjoyed the presentation from Douglas B. Fridsma, MD, PhD, titled "Interoperability: A Promise Kept (or not) to Transform Healthcare." It was great topic regarding our future with technology in the cardiovascular space and ecosystem and cardiovascular quality data."

  • Melanie Drudge, RN, BSN, MS, corporate manager of cardiovascular services at the Hospital Corporation of America in Nashville, TN.
