In a new Editor's Page published in the JACC: CardioOncology, Editor-in-Chief Bonnie Ky, MD, MSCE, FACC, discusses the critical importance of building the pipeline of young, motivated investigators and clinicians who want to make a difference.

She notes that there are several components to a successful mentoring relationship, including reciprocity, mutual respect, clear expectations, personal connections, and shared values between the mentor and mentee.

Ky also stresses the importance of institutional support for these initiatives.

"In order for mentoring programs to be successful, there needs to be programmatic support, including dedicated training, formal curricula and funding," Ky writes. "The ACC recently developed a broad collegewide mentoring program, which is a step forward and to which we should look for guidance and leadership." Read more.

Ky also sat down with Clyde W. Yancy, MD, MACC, recently to discuss the importance of mentorship.
