When Eugene Sherman, MD, MACC, established the ACC Benevolence Fund, his vision was simple but profound: ensure that no future cardiologist has to put their career on hold because of an unexpected financial challenge.
Inspired by the story of a trainee from Iran whose journey to medicine had already taken him through refugee camps and across continents, and who nearly gave up his fellowship dreams due to financial hardship, Dr. Sherman created the ACC Benevolence Fund to ensure future cardiologists never face such barriers alone.
The Fund provides one-time emergency support to medical students, residents, and fellows-in-training—helping them continue their journey to becoming leaders in cardiovascular medicine.
For Dr. Sherman, the impact is measured not in dollars but in people.
"Even if we only help one person a year and that one person goes on to a fulfilling career in cardiology – that's success," he says.
Dr. Sherman's gift is also a call to action. "Legacy is about doing something that will carry on and inspire others," he shares. He hopes to encourage fellow members and friends of the College to join him in strengthening the future workforce.
Through the Benevolence Fund, Dr. Sherman reminds us that investing in people—the "heart" of the profession—is just as important as investing in science and technology. His generosity ensures that tomorrow's cardiovascular leaders can pursue their calling, and that the ACC community can stand in solidarity with those who need it most.
