Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Identify knowledge gaps and engage in targeted study to prepare for board certification and ongoing maintenance of certification in Interventional Cardiology.
  2. Apply appropriate patient selection criteria for diagnostic cardiac catheterization and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) based on clinical presentation, noninvasive testing, and guideline-directed indications.
  3. Interpret coronary angiography and hemodynamic data to accurately assess coronary anatomy, lesion severity, ventricular function, and intracardiac pressures.
  4. Select and perform appropriate vascular access strategies, including radial and femoral approaches, while minimizing access-site complications.
  5. Integrate intravascular imaging and physiologic assessment tools (e.g., IVUS, OCT, FFR, iFR) to guide lesion assessment and optimize PCI outcomes.
  6. Formulate evidence-based revascularization strategies, incorporating lesion complexity, patient comorbidities, and multidisciplinary Heart Team considerations.
  7. Recognize, prevent, and manage complications associated with cardiac catheterization and PCI, including vascular injury, contrast-associated kidney injury, no-reflow, perforation, and acute vessel closure.
  8. Apply current guideline-directed medical therapy before, during, and after catheter-based procedures, including antiplatelet, anticoagulant, and adjunctive pharmacologic strategies.
  9. Evaluate and manage special populations and complex scenarios, such as chronic total occlusions, bifurcation lesions, left main disease, cardiogenic shock, and high-risk PCI.
  10. Incorporate quality, safety, and radiation-reduction principles into daily catheterization laboratory practice to improve patient and operator outcomes.
  11. Demonstrate clinical decision-making aligned with contemporary evidence and ACC/AHA guidelines, supporting maintenance of certification and ongoing professional development in interventional cardiology.
  12. Integrate systems-based practice principles by incorporating quality improvement, patient safety, cost-effective care, and culturally competent, multidisciplinary collaboration into cardiovascular care delivery.
