From SPECT to PET: Optimizing Myocardial Perfusion in Federal Health Care

Webinar Overview

Discover the foundations, clinical applications and implementation of myocardial PET perfusion imaging, with a special focus on veterans' cardiac care and the new tracer Flurpiridaz.

Join ACC's Federal Cardiology Member Section for a webinar providing learners with an up-to-date foundational knowledge of myocardial PET perfusion imaging and its clinical applications in cardiac care. Content will include an overview of clinical use criteria, a comparison of single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and PET perfusion modalities, and discussion of the newly U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved tracer, Flurpiridaz, and its role in clinical practice. Special focus will be placed on veterans as a unique patient population, highlighting how myocardial PET perfusion can offer particular benefits in this group. Patient case studies will be used to demonstrate real-world applications, illustrating how PET imaging informs diagnosis and optimizes clinical decision-making. The session will also address operational considerations: current availability of PET within the Veterans Affairs (VA) system, barriers to broader implementation, and practical guidance on initiating a new myocardial PET perfusion program.

Key Objectives/Learning Outcomes:

  1. Describe the appropriate use criteria for myocardial PET perfusion study, and differences between PET and SPECT.
  2. Apply patient selection criteria to identify veteran patient populations who would benefit most from myocardial PET perfusion imaging and incorporate this modality into patient decision algorithms.
  3. Interpret results of myocardial PET perfusion study in case-based scenarios and integrate findings into patient management decisions.
  4. Outline basic resources needed for a PET perfusion program within the VA and the U.S. Department of Defense.
