COVID-19 Re-Opening Perspective | Athena Poppas, MD, FACC, on "Re-Opening" CV Services
ACC President Athena Poppas, MD, FACC, talks about how her hospital system, in Providence, RI, is part of statewide planning efforts with the Department of Health, which includes a coordinated approach for proceduralists, surgeons and all hospital systems with the objective of simultaneously re-opening and starting with semi-elective procedures. Poppas believes this coordinated approach is important because they have the ability to test all patients pre-op and it helps ensure adequate capacity for hospital beds, ICU, PPE and personnel. Another important piece is incorporating shared decision-making and ensuring good conversations so patients understand they can return safely, along with assessing the risk for the patient to obtain treatment now or delay treatment.
