Recommended Adult Immunization Schedule: United States, 2011
Perspective:
The following are points to remember regarding the 2011 recommended adult immunization schedule:
1. Influenza (seasonal and H1N1): all adults ages 19 to >65 years, 1 dose annually
2. Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (Tdap) vaccine 1 one time after 18 years and tetanus, diphtheria (Td) boost every 10 years: all adults ages 19 to >65 years
3. Varicella: all adults ages 19 to >65 years, 2 doses
4. Human papillomavirus (HPV): 3 doses for females ages 19-26
5. Zoster: 1 dose after 60 years
6. Measles, mumps, rubella (MMR): 1 or 2 doses for adults ages 19-50 years; 1 dose for adults ages 50 years and older
7. Pneumococcal: 1 or 2 doses for adults ages 19-65 years; 1 dose for adults ages 65 years and older
8. Meningococcal: 1 or more doses any time after age 19
9. Hepatitis A: 2 doses any time after age 19
10. Hepatitis B: 3 doses any time after age 19
11. Varicella, zoster, MMR: contraindicated in pregnancy, immunocompromised but not HIV
12. Pneumococcal, meningococcal, hepatitis A, and hepatitis B: increased mandate for pregnancy, immunocompromised, and on hemodialysis
13. Health care professionals should all have MMR, pneumococcal, meningococcal, and hepatitis A and B
