Washington, DC (January 17, 2012)— Looking to lead an evolution in medical news and member service, the American College of Cardiology (ACC) and American Medical Communications today announced the creation of CardioSource World News, a new tabloid for the broader cardiology community.

Launching today, the monthly publication will serve a wide audience of cardiovascular professionals.  In content and graphics, CardioSource World News will not look like anything else currently published. There will be an edge and an attitude that is missing from what is often a dull recitation of news and information offered by other medical publications. CSWN will seriously entertain as it educates and updates the membership of the world’s leading cardiovascular medical society.

News and features will be supported by creative ways of looking at the information overworked professionals have to have: case studies and patient procedures turned inside out to see what did or didn’t work; insights and input from thought leaders with attitudes and personalities that bring life to the excitement they feel for their work and their profession; opinion that will be as provocative as it is informative; and even a lighter look at what doctors do in their down time – what little they may have today. Regular columns will range from the broader worlds of technology to the finer points of practice that drive doctors to distraction. The new monthly will also present entertaining and informative facts and figures culled from the ACC’s family of journals, the college’s quality care initiatives (such as Hospital 2 Home, the D2B [Door-to-Balloon] Initiative, and Imaging in “Focus”), the National Cardiovascular Data Registry (NCDR) and PINNACLE Network.

In addition to summaries of clinical and scientific trial data, CardioSource World News will include online resources that will permit readers to download ready-to-present slides and summaries. There will also be pullouts to assist clinicians in their patient education efforts and video that will keep members up-to-date as they multi-task their way through their day. Services such as this will be accessible via a web site (www.cswnews.org) that will incorporate audio and video interviews that expand on the features from the print publication. Also, since news happens daily, CSWN will crosslink to the ACC’s comprehensive online resource, www.CardioSource.org.

Leading the new publication will be Editor-in-Chief Christopher Cannon, MD, FACC. Senior Investigator in the Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction (TIMI) Study Group and Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Cannon has published more than 900 original articles, reviews, book chapters, or electronic publications and the author or editor of 10 books. In addition, he is the Editor-in-Chief of CardioSource.org.

“We’re really looking to provide a different periodical experience with CardioSource World News than what cardiologists encounter now,” Dr. Cannon said. “With this new publication, we aim to inform, entertain, provoke, and most certainly hear from members of the cardiology community.”

Jack Lewin, MD, CEO of the ACC, said that melding material from the print publication with online resources will allow the ACC to present news as it happens while also providing in-depth analysis and background. “CardioSource World News will be uniquely positioned to utilize resources and talent inside and out of the ACC in the pursuit of timely and engaging medical reporting,” Dr. Lewin said.

CardioSource World News will publish 13 times per year, with one issue dedicated to coverage of the ACC’s annual Scientific Sessions and i2 Summit. It will be provided to ACC members and fellows and be available by subscription.

“We’re excited about the launch of this publication, and we look forward to providing readers with a wealth of useful information presented in a unique and entertaining fashion,” said Gene Conselyea, managing partner of American Medical Communications and publisher of CardioSource World News.
