Guiomar Mendieta, MD, PhD, MSc, has earned the American College of Cardiology’s William W. Parmley Young Author Achievement Award, due to her outstanding research paper published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. This award honors a primary author who published a paper in JACC and is within five years of completing their training requirements for a specialty board certification or PhD.

Mendieta conducted research at the Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Cardiovasculares (CNIC) in Madrid, Spain. She is being honored for her study: “Determinants of Progression and Regression of Subclinical Atherosclerosis Over 6 Years.” Her mentor, JACC Editor-in-Chief Valentin Fuster, MD, PhD, MACC, is also being recognized for this award. Mendieta’s paper was published in the November 28, 2023, issue of JACC.

The award is funded by Elsevier and named for Dr. William W. Parmley, a past editor-in-chief of JACC. All papers are judged based on originality, methodology, presentation and importance. The award commends both the young investigator and the program in which he or she is working.

“William Parmley was a leader and trailblazer for innovation in cardiovascular research,” said JACC Editor-in-Chief Valentin Fuster, MD, PhD, MACC. “I feel proud that JACC continues to celebrate William Parmley’s legacy by recognizing up-and-coming researchers, along with their mentors and institutional research programs.”

This year's Parmley Award will be given out during the ACC's Annual Scientific Session (ACC.24), taking place April 6-8, 2024, in Atlanta. The award includes a stipend to attend an ACC educational event, a plaque and special recognitions at the ACC.24 Convocation Program and the JACC Journals Editor/Author Reception and in an upcoming issue of JACC.
