The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved on Dec. 17 the LifeVest wearable cardioverter defibrillator for children. The new indication allows children at risk for sudden cardiac arrest – but not candidates for an implantable defibrillator – to use the device.

The LifeVest wearable cardioverter defibrillator is made of an electrode belt and garment that surround the patient’s chest, and a monitor worn around the waist. If an arrhythmia is detected, the LifeVest delivers a shock to restore a life-sustaining heartbeat.
