In early October, the ACC held its inaugural Latin America Regional Conference in Mexico City. A total of 452 attendees participated in the two-day program; 75 original abstracts were submitted and 26 were presented; and over 50 educational presentations were given in Spanish and English, with Valentin Fuster, MD, PhD, MACC, one of the keynote speakers, presenting in both languages. In addition, the inaugural ACC Middle East Conference took place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, in late October. A total of 450 cardiovascular professionals attended the meeting which featured 39 original abstracts and over 57 educational presentations.

Interactive and innovative learning was a focus of both conferences, with attendees engaged in Body Interact and Heart Songs simulations through the ACC Learning Labs, as well as satellite sessions that were broadcast across Latin America and the Middle East.

“As Nelson Mandela said, ‘Education is the most powerful weapon which we can use to change the world.’ The benefit of these programs is that they focus on issues that are particularly relevant to the daily practice of physicians in the local region and therefore truly unique,” says Daniel José Piñeiro, MD, FACC, chair of ACC's Assembly of International Governors.

Due to the success of these pilot regional conferences, in 2017 the College plans to hold the Latin America Regional Conference in Mexico and the Middle East Conference in Dubai. The College also plans to expand its regional conferences to include Asia, with the inaugural Asian Regional Conference taking place in China. International Expansion: New International Chapters in Africa and Bangladesh In August, ACC's 37th International Chapter was established in Bangladesh, followed by the establishment of the African Consortium Chapter, bringing the number of ACC International Chapters to 38. Afzalur Rahman, DM, MD, FACC, president of the Bangladesh Society of Cardiovascular Intervention, and E. N. Oagola, MD, FACC, of Kenya, will serve as the inaugural governors for each chapter. In addition, Bongani M. Mayosi, MB, ChB, DPhil, FACC, president of the Pan African Society of Cardiology, and A.K.M Mohibullah, MD, FACC, president of the Bangladesh Cardiac Society, were integral to facilitating the formation of the chapters.
